How did that happen?  Well, here's where the lessons in knitting come in:

Once you knit sleeve number 1 with specific needles, then do go ahead and knit sleeve number 2 with the exact self same needles!  It will save time and effort.  It will!

Socks for Dad, Christmas present.




The yarn is XXL Trekking in the Deep Blue colourway 451.  There are bits of purple and very short bits of a darker blue in there too.  It is very subtle which I love.  I think the following photo shows the colours quite well.

I would like to believe that this yarn makes for very good men's socks.

A few months back (apology for my tardiness) I went along to the opening of the Sewing Room.  This is the second location around the corner from Beyond Fabrics, a wonderful quilting fabric and crafts items shop on Columbia Road.

They offer courses and workshops in this location. There are four places equipped with sewing machines.

It took me almost exactly a year.  A year of this mainly lying around.  I got the yarn in a sale (yup, there was a reason why this was cheap) and as soon as I knitted with it, I realised why.  This is called haspel silk and it looks gorgeous: lustreous, smooth, like liquid steel... Lovely!

A thought: I have two annoying problems to do with knitting: I have way too many WIPs and I've got a way too big stash.  Which means I have a real bad case of startitis -plus- ! the means to indulge in it too.

I mentioned in my last blog post that I would like to do something about two sewing projects that are lying around, crying out to get picked up again, and a green top that needed very little to go from 95% to all done!

This pattern is for an old-fashioned shawlette that used to be worn with a Dirndl (the folk dress of women in the Tyrol or in Bavaria) - I suspect that those ends would get tucked into the generously cut neckline of the Dirndl top, whichwould explain why they extend quite so far diagonally across.  Or perhaps into a belt?

I loved knitting this.  It was fun and quick.

This is a project from last year.  It took me a rather long time to tidy up the raw inside edge where I picked up stitches for the ruffle. At the time I didn't realise that the inside near the neck would show when you wear it.  It folds out, so of course it would!

I put a herringbone stitch over the join and now it's finished! The only thing left to do was take a picture. I did some stash-busting - with yarn I had lying around for 20+ years, because I like the colour so much (royal blue), and couldn't bear chucking it.  I finished the shawl and now I know why I could never before bring myself to knit with this 100% Dralon yarn showing an obscure brand name: Lady Joy. I love the story behind The Green Sweater by Elizabeth Zimmermann. Jared Flood took photos of the original cardigan that are amazing.  The story about how this garment was rediscovered is lovely and it really made me look very closely at all available photographs.

This picture shows the cardigan with the neck steek sewn down and cut and also the left sleeve steek (from the perspective of the person wearing it). It is a 4 ply cotton top-down tee type top with raglan lines from the corners of the neckline down to the underarm grafting lines.

This is the very quickest project I managed to do. I even finished sewing in the ends on the same day and now I am wearing it the following day.

I seriously need to diminish my yarn stash by quite a bit. It gets to the point where I don't know any more what I've got. That makes for lovely re-discoveries but it's terrible on the wallet.

This bracelet is actually black 'in real life', but I couldn't take a photo that showed enough details without flash - so this photo makes it look rather silver, which unfortunately it is not. The hemline is still quite flared, much more than I would like. The skirt does look a bit like it's skitting about!

This is the very first block I ever quilted. The pattern is called Paths and Stiles.
This is still a block because I haven't actually done anything with it yet (that would be way too 'over achieving' now, wouldn't it...). I made two, one for each side of a pot holder. Finally! I finally managed to get myself to The Quilting Bee shop in Enfield. Glorious quilting fabrics! They have a really nice range of fabrics, quite a few well-known brands but best of all: there is at least one fabric in each and every colour you could possibly want. Fantastic!
